2009 TSA Distinguished Service Award

William H. King, M.D.
Two months before Pearl Harbor, Mildred M. King delivered her first child, William Henry King. She and her husband, Eugene F. King, raised their six children in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
William graduated from Douglass High School and Oklahoma City University. He matriculated to Howard University where he received his medical degree in 1968. While in medical school, he met a medical physiologist, Rose Marie Thompson. She became his wife (life partner) and they raised three sons. Wilbur Eugene is a security officer for NASA. William Samuel is a high school teacher. Richard Daniel is a research Neurologist.
Dr. King joined the US Public Health Service (USPHS) where he did his internship and residency. After a fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, Dr. King was assigned to the USPHS Hospital, Seattle, Washington as a staff anesthesiologist. He subsequently became Chief of the Anesthesiology Service and Associate Director of Hospital Services. In 1979, he was transferred to the USPHS Hospital, Nassau Bay, Texas. Dr. King served as Medical Director (CEO) until closure of the PHS hospital system in 1981.
The next phase of Dr. King’s career blossomed in the Anesthesiology Department of the University of Texas Medical Branch. As an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, he taught medical students and residents while providing clinical care for patients. Dr. King also served as Assistant Dean for Student Services and Director of the Office of Special Programs.
The TSA & TMA became an active part of Dr. King’s life in the early 80’s. He has served in many capacities in both organizations including TSA President (1997). He is active in the ASA as well. Political activism has been a part of his career. He has been both a state and national “key contact” and attended numerous ASA Legislative Conferences.
Dr. King retired from UTMB in 1997 and redirected his efforts into community service. The Boys & Girls Club of Galveston County, Bay Area First Baptist Church, and Communities in Schools, Bay Area are a few of the organizations in which he has served.
