Legislative and Scientific Program Objectives
Target Audience
This activity is designed for anesthesiologists and resident anesthesiologists from Texas and surrounding states.
Educational Methods
The educational methods consist of didactic lectures, workshops and hands-on sessions with opportunities for Q & A from the audience and panel discussions.
Accreditation Statement
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Texas Medical Association and Texas Society of Anesthesiologists. The Texas Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The Texas Medical Association designates this educational activity for a maximum of 23.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Texas Medical Association designates the presentations “Ethical Dilemmas of the Internet Age: Is There Danger When Social Networking and Medical Practice Meet,” “Ethics of Painful Dilemmas: Oligoanalgesia,” and “Communication: Generational Professionalism” for two hours in ethics/professional responsibility education.Program Objectives
The practitioner of anesthesiology must possess the scientific background for clinical practice; maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of not only the specialty, but also of all additional related disciplines which may impact it; maintain an up-to-the-minute armamentarium of knowledge and skills for the selection and use of complex equipment, pharmacological agents, and procedures necessary for the provision of quality patient care; manage self and colleagues to function toward common goals in the clinical setting, the clinical and educational institutions, and the community in which the practice resides; serve as an expert in matters involving health care delivery; serve as an informed manager of clinical and educational services provided, including the acquisition and distribution of resources necessary in meeting professional goals; and provide assistance with and support of other service providers, departments, institutions, and organizations dependent upon the professional expertise of the practitioner. The activity is intended to provide the most recent information on issues that affect the day-to-day practice of the physician.
At the conclusion of this CME activity, attendees should be able to:

Summarize recently enacted Health Care Reform legislation as it relates to the delivery of anesthesia and patient safety in Texas and how new modes of health care delivery such as the Accountable Care Organization could alter the traditional practice structure of anesthesia in Texas.

Discuss the importance of national policy efforts on the State budget and its likely impact on the provision of anesthesia in Texas and recognize efforts by our state government to oversee potentially adversarial policies and mitigate the impact of such mandates.

Discuss the relationship between specialty societies and the Texas Medical Association (TMA) and how all can advocate for patient protection, access and safety.

Apply the latest scientific principles relative to the management of anesthesia during surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures.

Cite current controversies in fluid therapy such as type of fluids, transfusion triggers and blood product use.

Utilize the various techniques available for use in regional anesthesia including the use of ultrasound and applying regional anesthesia in the pediatric patient.

Evaluate practical approaches to solve complex clinical problems concerning the treatment of cancer and non-cancer pain and the prevalence of opioid abuse.

Review the latest on respiratory function and the various applications of specific methods in respiratory care and airway management.

Describe previous generation anesthetic delivery systems for the purpose of contrasting to modern systems and discuss the features and operational characteristics of recent generation anesthesia machines.

Discuss the new JC Standards for Medical Staff and mid-level provider re-credentialing.

Review the legal process with regard to medical malpractice lawsuits.

Identify tips to help maximize the impact of individual reading time on the ability to keep up to date.

Review the factors that influence the values of those younger and/or older than themselves and be able to identify the characteristics of specific generations.
- Review anatomic issues associated with positioning problems and identify the likely etiologies of various positioning problems.
